Tips and Tricks to Making the Best Apple Crisp
So you might be wondering, what's the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp? They are very similar. Let me explain the difference.
A crisp is a baked fruit dessert topped with a crisp and crunchy layer of ingredients. The topping may include a sugar, butter, oats, nuts, flour and a spices (e.g. cinnamon). The ingredients are tossed together and placed on top of fruit and then it is baked until the topping is crispy and golden.
Like a crisp, a crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a layer of topping. Crumble toppings rarely include oats or nuts. They do include a combination of flour, sugar and butter, like a pastry. However some variations may include oats or nuts. Crumble toppings are more clumpy than a crisp topping.
The Best Apples to Use for Apple Crisp
For a tart but sweet apple crisp I always gravitate towards granny smith apples. But really you could use any type of apple to make it.
You can even use a combination of apples like granny smith, gala apples, red delicious..
Just be sure to use fresh apples without blemishes. Or, cut out any bruises or blemishes.
Steps to Make Apple Crisp
First, thoroughly wash your apples and peel and slice them. I love, love using my apple peeler to peel the apples. Especially when you are using 4 to 5 apples. Using an apple peeler helps to zoom through the peeling and slicing process.
Cut your apples into squares or slices, it doesn't really matter which one but the smaller the pieces the better the apples will cook through. Then add sugar, flour and cinnamon. Toss all the ingredients together.
Place the apple mixture in a baking dish.
Combine the crumble ingredients and mix well. Then scoop the crumble on top of the apples
One great trick I learned, is using a cheese grater is a quick and easy way to incorporate butter into mixtures. Grating butter like cheese turns the butter into fine strips and makes it easier to combine it with the flour and other ingredients. Using a cheese grater will save you time.
Bake it for about 45 to 50 minutes or until the top is gold brown and the apples are oozing.
Don't forget to let it cool down. It's no fun prematurely putting hot apple in your mouth.
